Handyman Prices

Pricing

Handyman prices are quite difficult to figure out as every job is unique and often brings its own set of challenges. Our goal is to achieve what we like to call win-win pricing. This is where you get an excellent product and we get to cover our expenses and make a small profit.
The Handy Brit runs a very lean ship, allowing us to offer great Handyman prices. We try to be as efficient as possible to provide the best possible Handyman prices. However running a legitimate business is not cheap. In fact, most of the money we receive on a job after materials, goes toward taxes and business expenses, including paying our skilled team members.
Remember, the Bitterness of Poor Quality Remains Long After the Sweetness of Low Price is Forgotten.

The Handy Brit’s Pricing

At The Handy Brit jobs are priced one of two ways, (1) time and materials and (2) by the job.

Time and Materials Pricing

This pricing structure is used for small jobs or jobs that are difficult to determine exactly how much time the job will take.

By the Job Pricing

This pricing structure is used for all other jobs so that clients know exactly what the labor charges for the work will be upfront.

Materials Pricing

Materials costs are estimated for each job and shared with clients upfront. They include items that need to be purchased specifically for the work being accomplished as well as consumables for the job that are generally kept on hand. All materials include a percentage markup. This markup is listed on the estimate.

Unrealistic Handyman Prices

Unfortunately, the reality is that when you post on craigslist or Facebook for almost any job with unrealistic handyman prices, you will then be able to choose from a selection of people, willing to come and do the work. The problem is they have zero experience, don’t have the right tools, and often don’t even have a vehicle. As we’re sure you can imagine, they typically do a really bad job if they even complete the job. You then have to contact someone like us to get the job done properly. You would be amazed at the number of times we get paid to redo a job for someone.

How to Choose the Right Professional?

The Handy Brit’s sister-in-law is an interior designer and she has an interesting approach. When bidding on a large job she gets three bids. She always throws out the lowest bid. Then works with the highest two to get the best deal. When he asked “Why do you always throw out the lowest bid?” her response was simple “It’s just not worth the hassle, they always cause the most problems and the work is poor quality”.

Fair Handyman Prices

The average cost to hire a Handyman is $50-$125 per hour. There is a common belief that Handyman prices should be $20-$30/hour. However, you cannot run a legal business at these prices. We are at the lower end of the price scale but the highest end of the quality scale, which can be seen in our testimonials.
Here is a great example. While talking to a potential client who hired the cheapest “handyman” to texture a ceiling who didn’t turn off the AC or block off the AC collector. This completely destroyed our client’s AC handler. As I’m sure you can imagine, the couple of hundred dollars our client saved wasn’t worth the $4,000 to replace the air handler.
If you only follow one piece of advice make sure the professional you hire owns a legitimate business. Ours is “Handy Brit llc” which you can look up on sunbiz. Then make sure professionals you hire carry General Liability insurance.

Contractor Shortage

The truth is that there is a shortage of skilled workers. Many more people require services than skilled workers available. Where we live in Sarasota it is a very affluent area with many very expensive homes that require work. The reality is customers are competing for skilled work, rather than the skilled workers competing for customers.

Realistic Timelines to Get Jobs Completed

It is important to ensure you set a realistic timeline for your project. We can occasionally fit small jobs into the schedule. However, typically it’s going to be at least 3 weeks before we can complete your work. For larger jobs, such as replacing flooring or remodeling a bathroom, it could be 4 weeks or more.
